Why Truth Sounds Stranger Than Fiction?
Facts are like a roaring river, go against it and you will perish. So no matter how implausible truth might seem, one should accept it.
Strange Ideas
Just 100 years ago, talk of smartphones and internet was not even in science fiction. These technologies are nothing short of a miracle.
In deep ocean, where light can not even reach, there are very strange creatures living. Some are like insects but the size of a room.
Rapid pace of technological innovation
Technology is rapidly evolving, so a fact today might not be a fact later. Like solar energy was very expensive compared to fossil fuels, just 10 years ago. But now it's a lot cheaper. So if some one has old information about solar energy, he will dismiss the claim that solar is cheaper than coal. Because he has facts, but the problem is they were facts and now they are not.
Too Good To Be True
Lot of times the benefits seem too good to be true. For example, the new thing might not only be better than the old one it replaces but may also costs less.
Like there is a new way of creating websites known as JAMStack, the websites created using this method are free to host and they are also faster and more secure. On top of that, developing them is easier.
M1 chip by Apple for Macs is a mobile chip so not only its cheaper to manufacture but also takes less energy. But the surprisingly due to MacOS for ARM, it can run the apps much faster than Intel and AMD processors.
Needs Lot Of Research To Make Sense
Every claim is backed by reasons, and even if you study them they might not make sense. Because learning takes time as facts gradually sink in.
So only after a thorough research, you should reject the claims.
You should spent time with those who reject your views, even if it is emotionally difficult. This has two benefits, one is that you might be wrong about something and they will correct you. Second is that, you will get better at arguing about things you are correct.
Goes Against Our Mental Models
Everyone creates a mental picture of how a world operates. Generalize and assume many things, like X type of person will behave in certain way. This is necessary to free our mind to focus on other things.
But we should be careful not to have false beliefs. Like White Supremacist's believe that Jews are evil and they control the world, so they should be killed. But in reality they have only heard these things and never even met a Jew. If they sit down with a Jew and get to know them, they will soon find out that they are just normal people trying to live a peaceful and prosperous life.
Accepting Our Mistakes
Some people reject the truth, because then they would have to accept the sad reality that there beliefs were wrong. Doing this is very hard, as we need to sacrifice our proudness and accept that we had wasted our life or wealth. The past is history, the future is a mystery and the present is a gift – that's why its called the present. So you should live in the moment and do the right thing.
Not Popular In Your Social Network
People don't accept new ideas and change their behavior until and unless others in their social network adapt it. According Damon Centola, 25% is the tipping point for a fringe idea to become mainstream. Until 25% of people in a given network subscribe to that idea, the idea will remain on the sidelines.
